Ma Pi Leng Pass on the Nho Que River

The Ma Pi Leng Pass is famously one of Vietnam's most challenging and highest mountain passes, listed among the Four Great Passes of the Northwest alongside O Quy Ho, Pha Đin, and Khau Phạ passes. The peak of the pass reaches 1,500 meters, while the average elevation of this 20-kilometer stretch ranges between 1,200 and 1,400 meters above sea level. The pass is also commonly known by two other names: Ma Pi Leng(as read by the Hmong people)—it is widely regarded as the 'King of the Passes.

Lung Cu Flagpole

While visiting Tuyên Quang, you may consider an extension trip to the famous Lung Cu Flagpole, the headland of the Fatherland, which has long held a sacred image in the hearts of every Vietnamese person. This national flagpole stands proudly atop Lũng Cú Peak, also known as Dragon Peak. It is situated at an elevation of about 1,470 meters above sea level in Lung Cu Commune, marking the northernmost point of the country. The Lung Cu Flagpole boasts a long and meaningful history.

Looking up from below, the Lung Cu Flagpole stands proudly atop Dragon Peak, with the red flag and yellow star fluttering proudly in the wind. As both a historical relic and the sacred, magnificent northernmost point of the Fatherland, the Lung Cu Flagpole has attracted countless domestic and international visitors over the years. Along the path leading up to the flagpole, you must conquer 389 stone steps while simultaneously marveling at the spectacular natural tableau: The vast Đong Van Stone Plateau, rolling like a masterpiece of creation, and rustic ethnic villages that seem to appear and disappear in the distance. Further away, the M-shaped Hai Cau Hoan peaks out beneath the white mist, adjacent to winding terraced fields.

Hoang Su Phi terraced fields

Hoang Su Phi is located to the west of Tuyên Quang Province, bordering Vietnam and China, and is renowned for its more than 3,700 hectares of spectacular terraced rice fields. The sight of the terraces at Ban Phung bathed in sunlight, especially when Hoang Su Phi is in the golden harvest season, is truly unforgettable. The rice terraces in Hoang Su Phi were formed hundreds of years ago through the dedication and labor of local ethnic communities, including the La Chi, Dao, and Nung people. Among these, the fields in Ban Phung and Ho Thau are considered the most beautiful and concentrated. In 2012, the Hoang Su Phi Terraced Fields were officially recognized as a National Heritage Site.

Tan Trao Relic Area

Under the shade of the banyan tree in Tan Lap village, on the afternoon of August 16, 1945, the Vietnam Liberation Army held its send-off ceremony, witnessed by the people of Tan Trao and 60 national delegates attending the National People's Congress. General Vo Nguyen Giap read Military Order No. 1, after which the Liberation Army set off, passing through Thai Nguyen to advance toward and liberate Ha Noi.

Tan Trao Communal House is the village's communal house, dedicated to the Village Tutelary God and the spirits of the river and mountains of Tan Lap village. The communal house was built in 1923 in the style of a stilt house, featuring three bays, two wings, wooden pillars, and a roof thatched with palm leaves. It was here, on August 16, 1945, that the delegates of the National People's Congress approved the general policy for the General Uprising, designated the red flag with a yellow star as the National Flag, adopted the Tien quan ca (The Marching Song) as the National Anthem, and elected the National Liberation Committee (Provisional Government) headed by President Ho Chi Minh. On the morning of August 17, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh delivered the oath during the Committee's public launch ceremony at this very location.

Guides often suggest that visitors wish for something for themselves or their family, as this is considered a place of great spiritual significance and good fortune.

 My Lam Mineral Springs

The My Lam Hot Spring is located in Tuyen Quang Province, specifically in My Lam Ward, approximately 13 km southwest of Tuyen Quang City center. Due to its high hydrogen sulfide content, the Mỹ Lâm hot spring is also known as the Sulfur Spring. The spring offers numerous health benefits, featuring rich mineral content and a stable temperature of 67°C. The mineral water here is exceptionally clear and clean, as it is drawn directly from an underground source over 150 meters deep, making it safe for direct consumption.  Ideal time

Tuyên Quang is located in the Northeast region and features a tropical monsoon climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters.

The period from September to April (the dry season) is considered the ideal time to visit Tuyên Quang due to the cool and dry weather. During spring, ethnic villages are vibrant with the colors of peach blossoms, plum blossoms, and yellow mustard flowers adorning the mountainsides. Notably, September and October mark the golden rice harvest season in Hoang Su Phì, offering a perfect opportunity to combine rice field viewing with the cultural experience of ethnic life in Tuyen Quang. Visitors can participate in various community activities and sample highland culinary specialties. From approximately December to February, the chilly climate creates a fresh and crisp atmosphere, making it highly suitable for those who appreciate the wild, majestic beauty of the Northern mountains.

Yellow mustard flower season

The Đồng Văn Stone Plateau vividly contrasts its stark gray mountains with distinct seasonal blooms, offering a fresh spectacle year-round. In January and February, the plateau is highlighted by the brilliant white of plum and ban blossoms, interspersed with the bright yellow of mustard flowers. When the plum blossoms fade in March, the vibrant red rice flowers burst into bloom, seemingly warming the chilly weather of Tuyen Quang. By September, visitors can admire the golden hue of ripe rice fields across the terraced paddies. Most memorably, travelers will never forget the dreamy pink and purple shades of the buckwheat flowers that blanket the hillsides in the early winter months.

October - December Triangular Buckwheat Flower Season: The ideal time to see buckwheat flowers is from October to November of the solar calendar. Because this is the time when buckwheat flowers bloom the most. In addition, from April to May, there are also off-season white blooms, so you can also come here during this time. Local cuisine

Upon visiting Tuyen Quang, travelers can not only savor the rich flavors of the mountainous cuisine at local restaurants but also purchase unique specialties at local markets to bring home as gifts for family and friends, such as smoked buffalo meat, forest honey, or sanh orange.

Hemp Leaf Cake is a specialty deeply rooted in the culture of the Tay people in Tuyen Quang. It traditionally appears during the full moon of the seventh lunar month as an offering to ancestors, expressing respect and gratitude. The cake features a soft, pliable crust made from sticky rice flour mixed with hemp leaves. Inside, the filling is a rich, creamy blend of mashed green beans, fragrant grated coconut, and the subtle sweetness of sugarcane sugar.

Chiem Hoa gai cake

Chiêm Hoa Field Fish Paste is not only a traditional dish but also a unique folk remedy of the Tay people in Tuyen Quang, and it is featured at the Nam Phuong Tourist Restaurant. To produce a jar of this excellent paste, locals dedicate over a year to the process, from raising the fish in rice fields to meticulously fermenting the mixture. Standard fish paste is distinguished by its purplish-red color and an aroma infused with rice wine yeast, sticky rice, betel leaves, galangal, and red turmeric leaves. This rich, pungent, and savory flavor is sure to be a memorable highlight for visitors to Tuyên Quang.

Suoi Khoang Sausage is another flavor you must not miss. Made from local black pork, the sausage undergoes a thorough seasoning process, is stuffed into young intestines, sun-dried to set the surface, and then slow-smoked over a kitchen hearth. The final product has a characteristic red color and a strong fragrance of forest spices; the longer it is kept, the richer its flavor becomes. This is a common local delicacy and makes for a meaningful gift when visiting Tuyên Quang.

Mineral Spring Sausage

Lang Can Black Pig is a famous Tuyen Quang specialty, standing out for its delicious flavor and firm meat quality. Naturally raised on a diet of corn, potatoes, cassava, and wild vegetables, this pig breed develops a thick skin and fat that is rich but not greasy, offering high nutritional value. Attractive dishes made from this black pig, such as grilled with galangal, stir-fried rolls, five-spice grilled, or roasted pig, will certainly captivate any diner.

Tuyên Quang Sour Meat of the Dao Tien people is a must-try. This dish impresses with its mild sour taste, the chewiness of the skin, and a satisfying crunch from the layer of fat. When enjoyed with green betel leaves and sticky rice, the flavor becomes even richer and more appealing. Thanks to fresh ingredients and unique processing secrets, Tuyen Quang sour meat delivers an unforgettable culinary experience.

Armpit Pork is another of Tuyen Quang's famous specialties, fascinating visitors from the very first bite. These small pigs are freely raised on mountain slopes, eating wild vegetables and foraging for their own food. Consequently, the meat is firm, the skin is crispy, the fat content is low, and the flavor is naturally sweet. When preparing, armpit pork is often grilled whole over charcoal, roasted until crispy, or steamed with mountain spices, yielding a rich, aromatic flavor that is hard to resist. Visitors can enjoy authentic armpit pork at ethnic restaurants in Tuyen Quang City, or visit highland markets such as Na Hang, Lam Binh, and Chiem Hoa, where locals bring fresh products from the mountains and forests to sell. Many homestays in the Na Hang–Lam Binh area also serve this dish using the traditional processing methods of the Tay and Hmong people, which is an experience well worth seeking out.

Men Mne (also known as steamed cornmeal) is an indispensable traditional dish in the daily meals of the Hmong ethnic people. The dish is made from typical local corn varieties. After each harvest season, locals dry the corn on the porch or in the kitchen, wait until it is completely dry, and then grind and steam it to create Men Men. If you wish to savor this rustic dish, rich with highland flavor, you should contact local Hmong households or homestays to experience and fully enjoy the traditional taste.

According to local residents, the bustling lantern processions begin appearing throughout the streets as early as mid-July (lunar calendar) and continue until the end of August (lunar calendar). From approximately 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, residents and visitors can easily spot intricately designed lantern models of various sizes parading along the main streets around the city's central square in Tuyen Quang City.
