Minh Hai's death anniversary

Minh Hai's death anniversary

Chuc Thanh Pagoda, Hoi An

Minh Hai's death anniversary Chuc Thanh Pagoda (folk name is Khoai Pagoda) is an ancient pagoda with typical, artistic architecture, located north of the ancient city of Hoi An. This pagoda has long been listed as a relic of Quang region and is considered the ancestral temple of the Lam Te Chuc Thanh Buddhist sect in Dang Trong. The pagoda is associated with the life of Zen master Minh Hai, who was instrumental in spreading and establishing the Lam Te Chuc Thanh sect in Hoi An and Dang Trong at the end of the 17th century. Zen Master Minh Hai's family name is Luong The An, a native of Quan Chau prefecture, Fujian province, China. At the end of the 17th century, at the invitation of Lord Nguyen, he was one of 10 Chinese monks who came to Dang Trong to open a forum to spread Buddhism. After the precepts ended, they spread out to different places to spread Buddhism, among them, Minh Hai and Minh Luong came to Hoi An. Minh Hai chose a place that was still deserted at that time. People in the northern trading port built a hermitage to practice Buddhism, accepted local disciples and established the Lam Te Chuc Thanh Buddhist sect. This sect is growing and has now established over one hundred temples throughout the country as well as in some neighboring countries. Zen Master Minh Hai passed away on the 7th day of the 11th lunar month at the age of 77. The remains were buried in a tomb tower next to the current pagoda. Every year on this day, Buddhists in Hoi An, Quang Nam as well as in some provinces in the country gather at Chuc Thanh Pagoda to celebrate the death anniversary of Minh Hai very solemnly and lavishly. On this occasion, the temple grounds are decorated with bright flags. A large theater was covered in front of the yard to serve as a place for worship. The ceremony was held solemnly with the large participation of dignitaries, Buddhist clergy and Buddhists. The ceremony took place solemnly, lasting for many hours and included many rituals. In the sound of chants, sometimes low, sometimes high, sometimes chanting, sometimes reciting, sometimes chanting, sometimes immersed, mixed with the humming and tapping of wooden bells, the monks presiding over the ceremony in bright red and yellow robes, with pilum hats on their heads, gradually come and go amid the spreading incense smoke to perform traditional rituals, all creating a very unusual, escapist scene. Along with the ceremony, entertainment activities such as calligraphy displays, posters, camp decorations, cultural performances, group game competitions... were also held very enthusiastically and enthusiastically on the campus as well as in the vacant lands around the pagoda, attracting a large number of Buddhists to participate. This is the death anniversary of a Buddhist sect originating from Hoi An, with many unique features that need to be maintained to demonstrate the cultural diversity -  Hoi An's festival.
